Xiamen University Scholarships for International Students 2023-24, China

In 2006, XMU established its own scholarships for international students studying in degree programs. Tuition fees of scholarship recipients will be paid. In addition, monthly living allowances will be provided to outstanding graduate students in accordance with Chinese Government Scholarship standards.

Xiamen University (XMU), founded in 1921 by Mr. Tan Kah Kee, a well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader, was the first Chinese university founded by an overseas Chinese. XMU has long been among China’s leading universities under the national 211 Project, 985 Project and Double First Class Initiative, launched by the Chinese government to support selected universities in achieving world-class status. Nestled between the green hills and the blue sea, XMU is recognized as one of the most beautiful universities in the world for its excellent educational facilities and beautiful environment.

Xiamen University currently consists of Siming Campus, Zhangzhou Campus, Xiang’an Campus and XMU Malaysia. XMU consists of a graduate school, six academic departments, 33 schools and 16 research institutes. In 2022, six XMU subjects – education, chemistry, marine science, biology, ecology and statistics – are included in the country’s list of subjects to achieve world-class status. XMU is in the global top 1‰ of ESI in chemistry, materials science and engineering and among the top 1% of ESI in 19 disciplines. XMU currently has about 3,000 faculty members, 74.3% of whom are full or associate professors. 32 of them are members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Currently, more than 44,000 students study at XMU, including more than 20,000 undergraduate students, 18,000 graduate students, and 5,000 doctoral students.

XMU implements a comprehensive global aid strategy. The university has signed cooperation agreements with 259 foreign universities. Actively participating in international Chinese education, XMU has built 14 Confucius Institutes and 48 Confucius Classrooms in 12 countries on five continents, which is the highest number among Chinese universities with the widest geographical coverage in the list of “Double First-Class” Universities. In July 2014, XMU Malaysia broke ground, making XMU the first Chinese university to open an international campus, hailed as a jewel in the crown of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Compatibility

1. Applicants must meet the requirements of the respective programs to which they are applying.

2. Education level and age limit (as of September 1 of the academic year):

(1) Undergraduate programs: have a high school diploma or higher and be under 25 years old;

(2) Graduate programs: hold a bachelor’s degree or higher and be under 40 years of age;

(3) Doctoral programs: have a master’s degree or higher and be under 45 years of age.

Duration of scholarships

1. Bachelor programs: 4 or 5 years;

2. Master’s programs: 2 or 3 years;

3. Doctoral programs: 4 years.

Note: Scholarship recipients must participate in the annual review in accordance with the relevant scholarship management rules. Reviewers may continue to apply for or receive scholarships in the following academic year. Those who do not pass the review will have their scholarships suspended or disqualified. The specific rules and methods of annual inspection shall be subject to the latest notification issued in the current year.

Application for scholarships will be considered only after the applicant has been admitted to Xiamen University.

Applicants must complete an online application at http://application.xmu.edu.cn and download a scanned copy of the Xiamen University Scholarship Application Form (https://admissions.xmu.edu.cn/info/1141/1747.htm). The scholarship application form must be completed in Chinese or English and signed by the applicant. There is no need to send paper application materials.

Note:

1. Applicants are expected to submit a complete set of application materials and are responsible for the authenticity of their documents. Incomplete or false application materials will be rejected.

2. Applicants are expected to keep their phones on and check their email and online application accounts regularly as the XMU Admissions Office will contact them as needed.

Choice and notice

A thorough investigation will be conducted on the applicant’s academic record, language skills, general merit, research achievements and comments from their prospective supervisor. Shortlisted candidates will be submitted to the university administration for final approval.

Final results will be published on https://admissions.xmu.edu.cn in mid-July.
