Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Scholars and Artists 2023-2024

Every year, the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and more than 180 countries. Recipients are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are intended for young researchers who have completed a master’s or PhD degree from abroad and foreign artists with a bachelor’s degree.

Types of scholarships

  • The research fellowship Available to postgraduate researchers (with a minimum master’s degree) in any discipline who plan to come to Switzerland for research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level (research fellowship, Doctor of Philosophy, Postdoc).
    Research scholarships are awarded for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and two federal institutes of technology, as well as four research institutes. Only candidates nominated by an academic mentor at one of these higher education institutions will be considered.
  • Art scholarships Open to art students seeking an initial master’s degree in Switzerland (art).
    Art scholarships are awarded to study at any Swiss conservatory or art university. This scholarship is only available to students from a limited number of countries.

Subject to applications initial selection by the relevant national authorities and/or the Swiss diplomatic mission. The shortlisted applications then evaluated by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), which makes the final decision.

FCS evaluates scholarship applications based on three criteria:

  1. Candidate profile
  2. The quality of the research project or artistic work
  3. Synergies and potential for future research collaborations

The FCS consists of professors from all Swiss public universities. Scholarship awards are decided based on academic and scientific excellence.


FCS will announce its decisions on new scholarship awards by the end of May at the latest.


FCS will select scholarship recipients for the 2023-24 academic year by the end of May 2023. Scholarships for the academic year 2024-25 will be announced online from August 2023.
