Addressing Health Disparities in Advanced Disease

This exciting PhD cluster consists of four inter-faculty linked PhD fellowships to address health inequalities in advanced diseases at regional, national and international levels. Demographic changes in the UK mean that the number of older people is rapidly increasing, many living with advanced illnesses, complex multi-morbidities and frailty. Inequalities, including ethnic and social disparities in accessing and providing care, and variable community participation in care and support significantly affect experiences and outcomes of care. Although different conditions exist globally, the end results are similar. Integrated approaches to care are essential to find effective and efficient solutions to these problems.

Development of innovative hydrogen production and storage technologies for a net zero emission society

The development of the hydrogen economy is now recognized as a critical element for decarbonisation. There is an urgent need to use hydrogen as a feedstock for industrial processes, domestic heating and transport to move both industry and society towards a net-zero emission path. In the long term, hydrogen must be produced from renewable and/or low-carbon sources towards a low-carbon or “green” hydrogen economy. This doctoral study research cluster addresses some technical challenges through in-depth research in a number of key areas.

Diabetes and its comorbidities: a multidisciplinary approach

Diabetes is a multifaceted disease and reduces quality of life and life expectancy with many health complications. As the number of people living with diabetes increases, the impact of this disease on society is predicted to increase significantly in the coming decades.

Diabetes is a multifaceted disease that reduces quality of life and life expectancy through numerous health complications and comorbidities. The complexity of diabetes requires a multidisciplinary research approach to understand its mechanisms and provide new therapeutics. This PhD cluster will bring together a multidisciplinary team from five different Schools at the University of Hull to investigate key aspects of diabetes.

Sustainable Terrestrial and Marine Food Systems: Environmental Technologies and Their Impacts

Our food and energy production systems contribute significantly to environmental problems, including climate change, and technological solutions are often proposed as ways to reduce their carbon footprints. But these can be difficult to implement and can have unintended effects on the practices of those involved in farming and fishing. This cluster of projects includes a combination of scientific projects aimed at developing and testing various ecological technologies and social science projects aimed at considering the impacts on the practices of primary food producers as society aims for a low-carbon world.

Specifically, the cluster:

1. Outline the development of two technologies for use in above-ground food production and examine their implications for farmers.

2. Explore the effects of high energy prices and large-scale offshore wind deployment on the small-scale fishing industry.

Being in a cluster means that PhD students will be experts in their own discipline, while also participating in regular interdisciplinary cluster activities and working with stakeholders in the sectors they research.

Therapy University of Hull

Theragnostics integrates therapy and diagnosis into a single, holistic strategy for disease management and treatment. Hull Molecular Imaging Centers (HuMIC) is currently implementing the latest clinically proven theragnostics technology into daily practice at Castle Hill Hospital and is planning clinical trials for the benefit of patients in Hull, East Yorkshire and the surrounding area.

To advance our research in this area and leverage our world-class expertise and scientific/clinical infrastructure, we have recently established the University of Hull Theragnostics (HUT) cluster, bringing together four PhD students pioneering new theragnostics technology and its application to disease. HUT brings together two of the most successful scientific research groups in the Faculty of Health Sciences: Molecular Imaging (led by Prof Steve Archibald and Dr Louis Allott) and the Wound Healing research group (led by Prof Mat Hardman and Dr Holly Wilkinson). Together with the four excellent PhD candidates we are looking to recruit, we will explore new and unique scientific foundations in the emerging field of theragnostics to improve patient health in the region and beyond.

Translational nanoconstructs for targeted tissue harvesting and guided surgery in cancer

Applications are invited for two PhD scholarships, one in synthetic chemistry (PhD Chemistry) and one in medical imaging (PhD Medicine) to support a major research project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). This project aims to provide transformative advances in the development of nanoparticle constructs for use in precision surgery and beyond (such as therapeutic drug delivery).

The project is part of a collaboration between the University of Hull, Imperial College London and King’s College London. Appointed graduate students will have the opportunity to work with a number of scholars at these institutes.
