The University of Pennsylvania’s Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy and the Paideia Program of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation are calling for one-year Postdoctoral Fellowships. Research programs welcome scholars from any discipline relevant to the Mitchell Center and Paideia Program themes, particularly the theory and practice of dialogue across differences in democracies.

In addition to conducting independent research and participating in the intellectual life of the Penn community in general, the Fellow is expected to teach an undergraduate course designated by SNF Paideia related to his academic interests; leading a research workshop for Mitchell Center undergraduate students; Contribute to the organization of public events on topics related to the Mitchell Center and the Paideia Program; and attend other Mitchell Center and SNF Paideia events when possible. The stipend will be at least $53,800 and benefits will include health insurance.

Global in its outlook and multifaceted in its goals, the Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy seeks to contribute to the ongoing search for democratic values, ideas, and institutions around the world. In addition to hosting speakers from the fields of academia, journalism, politics, and public policy, the Mitchell Center supports undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral research. From 2007 to 2017, it continues the legacy of the Penn Program for Democracy, Citizenship and Constitutionalism, which promoted interdisciplinary scholarship..

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Paideia Program serves as a hub for dialogue in undergraduate education at Penn. SNF Paideia collaborates with many campus institutions to promote opportunities for students to develop the knowledge, skills, ethical frameworks, and practices necessary to become informed, engaged, and effective community members and leaders in society. The SNF Paideia Program promotes the free exchange of ideas, the civil and robust discussion of differing opinions, and student and community health through SNF Paideia-designated courses, the Fellows program, and campus events.

International scholars are invited. Applicants must receive their PhD before May 2018, but complete all requirements for a PhD by 30 September 2023.

5. Writing sample – An extract from an article or book or dissertation section. (20 page limit.)
6. Confidential Letters of Recommendation (three) – Referees should be asked to comment on your proposed project and to discuss your qualifications as a teacher.
