Award Description:

The International Doctoral Student Award (IDSA) will be awarded automatically to eligible students enrolled full-time in a doctoral program at the University of Waterloo. The value and duration of the award varies depending on: the number of terms the student is enrolled in the program; whether or not they were admitted to a master’s degree, bachelor’s degree or transferred from a master’s degree to a doctorate degree; and the number of terms the student has previously received an award.

The cost of the full IDSA/IDSA4 approximates the tuition fee difference between domestic PhD and full-time international PhD students.

  • Eligible international students enrolled full-time in a doctoral program and admitted to the master’s level will receive an IDSA of $5,140* per semester, 9.0 terms, $15,420 per year, until the end of the third year of the doctoral program. In year 4 (terms 10.0 to 12.0) a qualified student will receive an IDSA4 funded as follows: 2/3 as an award from the University/Faculty of $3,427* per semester and 1/3 as an award from the department/supervisor for one term In the amount of $1,713*.
  • All eligible students transferring from a master’s program to a doctoral program at 4.0 will receive an IDSA of $5,140 from 4.0 to 12.0.
    • Students admitted to the program before By spring 2019 and those transferring from master’s to doctorate will receive an IDSA extension from 13.0 to 15.0 at an IMSA cost of $2,570.
    • Students admitted to the program effective spring 2019 and subsequently transitioning from master’s to doctorate will receive an IDSA extension at an IMAE fixed cost of $2,500 for terms 13.0 and 14.0. Students can receive this cumulative IDSA funding for a maximum of 11 full-time terms, provided they are within the permitted program duration (15 terms).
  • All eligible students admitted directly from undergraduate to doctoral level will receive an IDSA worth $5,140* between 4.0-12.0 terms.
    • Students admitted to doctoral studies directly from the bachelor’s level before By spring 2019, the 1.0 to 3.0 and 13.0 to 15.0 IMSA will receive an IDSA worth $2,570.
    • Students admitted directly to the PhD from undergraduate level in spring 2019 and later will receive an IDSA with an IMAE fixed value of $2,500 for terms 1.0 to 3.0 and 13.0 to 14.0.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria:

International graduate students enrolled full-time in a doctoral program at the University of Waterloo.

Students must meet the academic progress requirements of their program.

Students must not receive funding in excess of the minimum PhD funding value without concurrent tuition awards (eg PSI or Lazaridis Tuition Awards) or any external awards, sponsorships or self-funding.
