If you are a high-achieving undergraduate or graduate student and aspire to study a PhD program at a world-class research institution, the President’s PhD Scholarship can provide you with an excellent opportunity to receive full tuition fees and a generous stipend. For a 3.5 year PhD place at Imperial College London.

The President’s PhD Fellowships allow students to pursue a research project of their choice with the support of an excellent supervisor, along with the opportunity to form a cohort with other President’s PhD Fellows.

Applicants for President’s PhD Scholarships for 2023-24 will also be considered for the Sir Michael Uren Engineering Scholarship and the Sir Michael Uren Medical Scholarship, which support interdisciplinary research in medicine and engineering. These scholarships provide the same support package as the President’s PhD Scholarships.

What does the scholarship cover?

Each of the 50 available scholarships provides the following support over the course of 3.5 years of study:

  • Full funding of tuition fees
  • A stipend of £22,900 per annum (2023-24 rate) to help with living costs
  • A consumables fund of £2,000 per year for the first 3 years of study
  • A program of bespoke opportunities and events delivered by the Graduate School

You will also have access to all the support available to postgraduates at Imperial, including special support for disabled and international students, and the wider Graduate School program of professional skills courses.

The scholarship applies to both full-time and part-time study.

Academic criteria

  1. Candidates, a first class or equivalent at a bachelor’s or integrated master’s degree; and/or
  2. Candidates with an Independent Master’s qualification must obtain a the difference or, where this has not yet been achieved, can provide evidence of superior performance leading to distinction.

This allows candidates who have demonstrated excellence at graduate level but have not obtained a first-class undergraduate degree to apply for the scheme.

Candidates with only a bachelor’s degree or an integrated master’s degree must still be admitted or obtain a first class or equivalent.

Other criteria

  1. Applications are welcome from talented candidates at Imperial College London, UK and around the world. There are no nationality restrictions, although some departments may not support international candidates.
  2. The scheme is open to new PhD applications only. Currently enrolled Imperial PhD students does not fit Must be considered for a Presidential PhD scholarship.

How to apply

Applications for this scholarship program will be considered at three points during the academic year – see below when you will hear.

Before applying

Application process

  • There is no specific scholarship application form.
  • You must submit your application to study at Imperial through our online admissions system and your department will nominate you for a scholarship based on academic merit and potential.

Scholarship specific guidelines for the admission process are given below; you must also meet any additional application requirements outlined by your chosen department.

Additional admission instructions

  1. For places funded for the 2023–24 academic year, the earliest start date is 1 August 2023 and the latest start date is 1 November 2023.
  2. When required a Personal statement You must attach a 2-page document:
    1. the first page should be a personal statement (motivations for applying to Empire and the scholarship and any other supporting information not included elsewhere in the form that will strengthen your application)
    2. the second page should be your research proposal. If your department shortlists you for a scholarship, you can provide updated versions of this statement if requested after application submission. It is recommended that you write in the first person.
  3. When their names are requested two academic referees, these should be people who can provide an academic reference to support your application (eg your personal tutor or thesis supervisor). You should not include your proposed PhD supervisor. It is recommended that you share this guide with your two referees, especially noting the recommendation to use “they/them” language (rather than gender pronouns).
  4. To be considered for the President’s PhD Fellowship program, you must select this option in the funding section of the additional questions tab of the online application form.

Review and selection

50 scholarship places are available. Applications will be considered in two stages:

  1. Candidates who meet or are predicted to meet the eligibility criteria will be considered by the Department to which they apply. Departments will select a shortlist of candidates to submit to the College Selection Panel for consideration.
  2. The College Selection Board will make the final decision. The members of the panel are the vice-rector (research), the director of the graduate school and the faculty’s deputy dean for scientific affairs. Imperial recognizes excellence in all our faculties and therefore allows some faculty-level offers to be made:
    1. The faculty placement phase will evaluate and rank candidates on Departmental shortlists, making initial offers to the most promising candidates. Associate Deans of Faculty provide these candidates with a rationale for recommendation to the College Selection Panel.
    2. The College Selection Panel makes additional offers of ring-fenced placement to candidates who meet broad participation or other strategic alignment objectives.

Evaluation criteria

Candidates are evaluated by the Faculties and College Selection Board based on the following criteria:

  1. Academic excellence – as demonstrated by:
    1. past academic results
    2. transcripts
    3. relative class position
    4. awards
    5. differences
  2. Research potential – as demonstrated by:
    1. candidate’s research experience to date
    2. they are interested in discovery
    3. research plan and its potential contribution as described in their research proposal
    4. a statement from the department that also reflects the performance at the time of the interview

Successful candidates will receive written confirmation of their scholarship. Any offer of a PhD place will be subject to the candidate obtaining the predicted qualifications.

Applicants who are not selected for a fellowship will automatically be accepted into the standard PhD degree.

  1. Applicants applying by 11:59pm (UK time) November 4, 2022 and will be informed about receiving a scholarship January 23, 2023.
  2. Applicants applying by 11:59pm (UK time) January 6, 2023 and will be informed about receiving a scholarship March 20, 2023.
  3. Applicants applying by 11:59pm (UK time) March 3, 2023 and will be informed about receiving a scholarship May 22, 2023.
