The Center for Educational Measurement (CEMO) at the University of Oslo invites applicants for the Gustafsson & Skrondal Visiting Scholarship. The visiting scientist program annually welcomes young researchers from Norway and abroad to engage in collaborative research and to participate and enrich the research community at CEMO and the University of Oslo. All Gustafsson & Skrondal Scholars are expected to embody this namesake’s principles of sound scientific inquiry and intellectual vitality.

Jan-Erik Gustafsson is a professor of education at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Professor Gustafsson’s tireless dedication was instrumental in the development and early success of CEMO, where he served as Interim Director. He is a leading researcher in international large-scale evaluation, with extensive scholarship in educational research and quantitative methods. Professor Gustafsson received an honorary doctorate from the University of Oslo in 2017.

Anders Skrondal is a senior researcher in the Department of Epidemiology at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Skrondal is well known internationally for his work on the development of the Generalized Linear Latent Mixed Model (GLLAMM) framework and associated software, and as the 2016-2017 President of the Psychometric Society. Professor Skrondal has provided substantial intellectual support to CEMO and continues his important role as Professor II at CEMO.

Applicants must hold or be eligible for university positions or similar positions; however, we welcome applicants from other fields, including intergovernmental and non-profit organizations. Scholars should generally hold a PhD or equivalent. Applications will be assessed for relevance to CEMO’s research specializations, as well as the quality of their research and their plans to stay at CEMO. Please contact the CEMO team members you would like to work with and ask about collaboration opportunities before submitting your application. Visiting scholars are expected to be in residence for the duration of their term, which should be six months (minimum three, maximum nine months). Each scholar is expected to give presentations on their research during the term and demonstrate the results of their stay at CEMO.

We will cover the travel and living expenses of the Gustafsson & Skrondal scientist during his stay at CEMO. In addition, you will receive free office space, relevant technical equipment and university library, as well as free access to courses provided by CEMO. Each scholar is responsible for securing their own visa if required; however, we can provide administrative assistance in the process. We also assist in finding housing and all formalities related to moving to another country.

Prospective visiting scholars must submit the following:

  • CV
  • Including a two-page personal statement
    • a description of the project you intend to work on during your stay
    • the expected result of your scholarship remains with CEMO
    • the name of the CEMO team member(s) you plan to work with and how your proposal relates to their expertise. Please contact CEMO team members and ask about collaboration opportunities before submitting your application. Preference will be given to applicants with shared interests who are members of more than one CEMO team
    • Expected contribution to CEMO
    • proposed start and end dates
  • Names and contact information for two professional references, one of whom may be a member of the CEMO team

The deadline for the next application is planned for the end of summer 2023. The application form will be opened at the appointed time.
