Application deadline: June 1, 2023

About

The University of Surrey’s School of Economics offers an attractive PhD program in Economics, comparable to the best PhD programs in the USA. Our MRes/PhD Economics is designed for candidates with an excellent background in Economics, usually with a Master’s degree in the subject, and who wish to engage in the best doctoral research in Economics. The standard entry route to the PhD program is the MRes Economics program. The MRes provides advanced one-year training in micro, macro, econometrics and research methods, followed by a three- to four-year PhD program upon successful completion, during which students take advanced PhD field courses and work on their research. A small number of places on direct entry to the PhD program are reserved for applicants with a degree similar to our MRs.

Our PhD program produces graduates sought after by the world’s leading economics departments, business schools and research institutes. Our PhD students have gone on to academic positions as lecturers and postdoctoral researchers in the UK and abroad, including at institutions such as Cambridge University, London School of Economics, University of Glasgow, University of Sussex, University of East Anglia and the European University Institute. .

We are delighted to be able to offer generous studentships for the duration of the MRes/PhD course for those with strong research potential.

The School of Economics has a leading reputation in research and teaching. Overall, we are ranked in the top 10 for world-leading research, 8th for research environment and 6th for the impact of our research in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants are typically expected to have a first-class honors degree in a relevant subject and a master’s degree (or equivalent qualifications) in a relevant subject, but we also welcome applications from outstanding candidates without a master’s degree.

We also require a recent GRE general test score (quantitative reasoning portion only); Applications without proof of GRE will not be considered. Previous Surrey Economics students are not required to submit GRE scores.

English language requirements – IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each element or other equivalent tests are accepted. For detailed entry requirements, including country-specific requirements, visit the MRes program website.

We do not require a research proposal, as successful candidates will write an MRes thesis during MRes, often the basis for the first chapter of a PhD thesis. We would like to briefly explore your research interests in a cover letter. You also do not need a supervisor at this stage, as successful candidates will be matched with a supervisory team during the MRes.
