About the program

The purpose of the program is to provide an eight-week biomedical research experience to undergraduate students from various countries (including Japan) who intend or are considering a career in biology or related sciences and wish to pursue graduate studies. basic and translational sciences. Research experiences are provided by faculty from the Faculty of Medicine, Graduate School of Engineering, School of Science, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Institute of Industrial Sciences. By the end of the summer experience, students are expected to acquire the knowledge and skills to conduct research. Students are also expected to expand their international friendships through collaborative experiences. These experiences will help students develop future collaborations in many cases.

In addition to 8 weeks of full-time work in the lab, the program features:

  • Visits to Graduate Schools and Institutes related to biomedical research
  • Special workshops and sessions where students can meet and discuss
  • Information sessions on how to apply to Graduate Schools at UTokyo
  • Access to UTokyo campus facilities such as the Library, Health Center and Gymnasium
  • Japanese cultural events
  • Excursions


Applicants to the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program must be undergraduate students who:

  • Enroll in a college or university offering a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) worldwide; and
  • At least have completed the first year of undergraduate studies when the summer program begins and
  • Those who have not graduated before the start of the summer program and will continue their undergraduate studies for at least 1 semester or 1 quarter after the end of the summer program

Applicants to the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program also:

  • Have a strong academic performance; and
  • Have good English language skills as demonstrated by a minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 72, IELTS overall score of 5.5, Cambridge English FCE, TOEIC score of 1095, TOEIC L&R score of 785 or TOEIC S&W score of 310 Native English or English speakers not your first language and
  • Interested in pursuing a Ph.D.


  • Making every effort to participate in the Amgen Scholars Program. Scholars may not take any courses or work during the program. In addition, all participants must be able to participate for the entire duration of the program.
  • Live in accommodation provided by UTokyo.
  • Participate fully in the daily life of the research team, respect the work of all members of the laboratory, attend and participate in laboratory meetings or other gatherings.
  • All necessary conferences, activities, and social events are required to attend orientation on the first day of the program.
  • Submit a poster/presentation describing the summer research project.
  • Submit a research paper to the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program Director at the end of the program.

  • Room: Accommodation near campus
  • Scholarship: 250,000 JPY
    *The scholarship should be used liberally to budget for meals and any personal travel during your stay in Japan.

Economy class airfare for flights to attend the program and the Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium in Singapore, or round-trip train tickets for local students will be provided. The most economical and direct route and travel schedule will be determined based on discussion between the participants and the program office. If the schedule is changed due to the participant’s personal reasons, they will have to pay the cost of the originally booked flights to the University of Tokyo.
