To be eligible for the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals, you must be a citizen of one of our 41 eligible countries and have sufficient documented evidence of work and leadership experience. You must also follow the University’s application process and be accepted into one of the Master’s programs in time.

Overview

What is the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals?

The SI Fellowship for Global Professionals aims to develop future global leaders who will contribute to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and sustainable development. Applicants must have a clear vision of how their studies will contribute to the sustainable development of their country and region. In 2023, the Swedish Institute will award approximately 350 scholarships for master’s studies in Sweden.

The scholarship is for a full-time, one- or two-year master’s program and is funded by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Swedish Institute announces the acceptance of applications for the master’s program once a year, starting from the fall semester. To have a successful application, make sure you are eligible, complete all the steps of the process and have the required documents to complete your application on time. Please read the following pages carefully.

What is included

What you get as a scholarship recipient:

  • Full tuition coverage. The fee is paid directly by SI to your Swedish university at the beginning of each semester.
  • Monthly payment SEK 11,000 to cover your living expenses for the duration of your studies.
  • Insurance against illness and accidents.
  • Travel Grant. This is a one-time fee and does not apply to students already living in Sweden.
    • for scholars from Bangladesh, Bolivia; Brazil, Cambodia, Cameroon, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Morocco, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda , South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Vietnam, Zambia or Zimbabwe – the scholarship includes a travel grant of SEK 15,000 for the entire study period.
    • for scholars from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, the scholarship includes a travel grant of SEK 11,000 for the entire study period.
  • Membership SI Network for Future Global Professionals (NFGP) – a platform to help you develop professionally and network while in Sweden.
  • Once your retirement is over, you are Member of the SI Alumni Network. As a member, you get a unique opportunity for continuous networking and professional development.

Retires no:

  • Provide additional grants for family members.
  • Pay the application fee for university admission.
  • Allow changes to the curriculum. We can only support you through an award-winning master’s program.
  • Allow extension or modification of the scholarship period awarded.

Criteria

Country of citizenship

You must be a citizen of a country eligible for SI scholarships. However, you do not need to be living in the country at the time of application.

University admissions

You must pay tuition fees at Swedish universities, follow the University Admission steps and be admitted to one of the eligible master’s programs by March 30, 2023.

Previous experience

Must have at least 3,000 hours of demonstrated work experience. In addition, you must demonstrate leadership experience from your current or previous employer or civil society involvement.

Masters programs

The master’s programs you are applying for must be eligible for SI scholarships. We prioritize programs within certain topics depending on your country of citizenship.

You are not eligible if…

Regardless of all the eligibility criteria listed above, you no You are eligible for SI Scholarships for Global Professionals if you:

  • have lived in Sweden for two years or more before the retirement period (starting in August 2023);
  • have previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for graduate study or research at a Swedish university/university college. Previous participants of the SI Summer Academy for Young Professionals (SAYP) and students who have attended SI summer courses in Swedish or the Swedish Institute Summer University (SISU) can still apply;
  • already hold a degree from a Swedish university/university college;
  • are currently enrolled in a study program at a Swedish university/university college;
  • Hold Swedish or EU/EEA citizenship*, a permanent residence permit in Sweden, or a temporary work and residence permit based on work or family ties with a Swedish/EU/EEA national with temporary or permanent residence rights in Sweden; or
  • Have dual citizenship in countries not listed in the DAC list of 2022-2023 ODA recipients.

*Exception: Students with dual citizenship in Romania, even if they are EU citizens, can apply for the scholarship and must state the citizenship eligible for the scholarship when applying for both SI and University Admissions.

Country of citizenship

You must be a citizen of one of the eligible countries. However, you do not need to be living in the country at the time of application. If your country of citizenship is not listed below, we suggest you search for it other scholarship opportunities.

Compatible programs

About 700 English-taught master’s programs are eligible for the SI scholarship starting in the fall semester of 2023. Previous Experience

Work experience

To qualify for Global Professionals, you must have at least 3,000 hours of work experience in a maximum of three organizations/companies by February 10, 2023. Valid work experience for Global Professionals includes both full-time and part-time employment, for example as an employee, employer or freelancer. You will be required to confirm the experience on your application. If you do not have the required work experience, your application will be rejected. However, you are not required to be working at the time of application.

Preference will be given to candidates with strong professional experience.

Leadership experience

In addition to your work experience, you should be able to demonstrate previous leadership experience. Experience can be demonstrated, for example, through previous work experience or participation in civil society organizations or networks.

Leadership experience includes the experience of leading other colleagues/organizations, giving mandates to influence the development strategy of the organization you work for, delegating tasks to colleagues and familiarity with decision-making processes.

There is no requirement for a minimum number of hours in leadership experience. However, preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated strong and relevant leadership experience.

Required documents

We will not review any documents other than those required. You must use the forms provided by SI and complete your application in English. Otherwise, your application will not be considered further.

A complete application consists of:

  • CV (we only accept SI template)
  • Reference letters (we only accept SI template)
  • Valid and completed evidence of work and management experience (we only accept SI template)
  • A copy of your valid passport/National ID card
  • Motivation (you will be asked in the application portal)

Note! If any of the above is not present, your application will be rejected.

CV (Curriculum Vitae)

You must use form SI for CV 2023/2024 and must have a CV should not exceed three pages. It is up to you to decide which of your previous experiences is appropriate for your application. Additional pages will not be considered during evaluation.

Reference letters

You must use form SI for the 2023/2024 reference letter. All reference letters must be signed by a judge and certified by the official seal of the referring organization or notary’s office. Letters must be printed, then printed, signed, stamped and uploaded as a single PDF file. More information can be found in the form and in the FAQ.

  • Two different reference letters are mandatory.
  • Must be one of the letters based on work experience (required). If the second letter of reference is based on your involvement in networks or civil society organizations, it is also a merit outside from your regular job.

Evidence of work and management experience

You must use form SI for proof of work and leadership experience 2023/2024. The case and management form must be signed by the judge and certified by the official seal of the referred organization or notary office. The form(s) must be printed, then printed, signed, stamped and uploaded as a single PDF file. More information can be found in the form and in the FAQ.

A copy of your valid passport/National ID card

You must submit a copy of your valid passport/National ID card along with the application. It should clearly show your personal details, including your name, nationality and photograph. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have a copy of your passport/National ID is reliable at the time of application. You will be asked to upload a copy of the passport to the online application portal.
