Academic research PhD programs:
SMU awards scholarships, bursaries and other financial assistance schemes to PhD students on a competitive basis. At the time of admission, we assess applicants for various award schemes based on qualifications and eligibility for these schemes.
Full Scholarships
SMU PhD Full Scholarships cover registration and subsidized tuition fees (see SMU PhD Program Fees for details). As soon as you receive the pension, you will receive a monthly living allowance (as indicated in the table below according to your nationality). These scholarships are renewed annually based on good academic performance during the first 4 years of your PhD candidacy.
Beyond the fellowship period, you can receive ongoing support at SMU through research assistantships and teaching assistantships (see Financial Aid Schemes in year 5) or industry grants.
Scholars under this scheme are not allowed to engage in any other gainful employment.

Notes
- Monthly stipend rates are effective August 1, 2021.
- These degrees do not apply to the PhD in Business (General Administration).
- The PhD qualifying exam assesses students’ mastery of the foundation required for the dissertation, the next stage of the PhD program.
- From August 2015, Singapore citizens will receive a 17% CPF contribution.
- A scholarship recipient must pass the Qualification Examination before the 25th of the month to be eligible for the next month’s scholarship increase.
Terms and Conditions under Full Scholarship
Scholarship recipients will be subject to the terms and conditions of the scholarship offer (for Singapore Citizens/Singapore Permanent Residents and International Students). Recipients must sign a letter of commitment.
Financial aid schemes in 5th year
After you stop receiving fellowships at the end of the 4th year of your PhD program, you can work part-time or full-time as a Research Assistant (RA), Teaching Assistant (TA) or Graduate Instructor (GI). main. If you are working full-time, you will need to complete your studies on a part-time basis (as approved by the relevant School).
If you are an international student, you can work up to 16 hours per week on a part-time basis. If you are working on a full-time basis, you will either have an Employment Card or an S-Pass which will be approved by the Ministry of Manpower. However, to be approved for full-time employment, you must complete all requirements of the PhD program, except for your dissertation.
Recruitment procedures and pay rates are based on existing guidelines.
Student Training (such as the SMU Teaching Center of Excellence and English Communication Center workshops) is available to SMU PhD students. These programs will strengthen your skills to better contribute as an RA, TA or GI.
