Up to four scholarships are available for UK and International applicants applying to study a PhD in the Department of Marketing at the University of Leeds Business School. Three scholarships will be available for our October 2023 intake and one for our February 2024 intake. This advertisement and all information and links contained therein are current as of February 2024.

Marketing doctoral students will develop the ability to pursue research that advances the boundaries of the marketing discipline and addresses business and marketing challenges using advanced research tools and techniques. They will learn to draw conclusions from research findings and communicate their findings to policy makers, practitioners and academics.

The PhD program supports doctoral research students and enables them to develop skills in different types of data analysis using a range of techniques and approaches. In addition, PhD students are expected to attend and participate in seminars, workshops and conferences organized by the Department of Marketing at the University of Leeds Business School and the Doctoral College more widely. It helps expose doctoral research students to new research ideas and practices and creates a stimulating environment for innovative thinking and impactful scientific research.

  • This competition is open to local and international applicants. Some stipend will be given in this round.

Duration of the award

  • Full time (3.5 years). The award will initially be for one year and is renewable for up to two and a half years, subject to satisfactory academic progress.


  • The award will cover full fees at the standard tuition rate at the University of Leeds.
  • Standard UKRI rate maintenance grant (£17,668 in Session 2022/23).

Other conditions

  • Applicants must not already be awarded or currently pursuing a Ph.D.
  • Prizes must be redeemed by 1St February 2024.
  • Awards are available to new Postgraduate Researchers undertaking full or part-time research leading to a PhD. Students already registered for PhD research are excluded from applying.
  • Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds while receiving this Scholarship.

Entry requirements

Candidates should ideally have a first class or at least a good second class bachelor’s degree. Candidates must hold a British Master’s degree (or equivalent degree from an overseas university) or equivalent professional qualification:

minimum average score of 60 percent (or equivalent); and in a relevant academic discipline.

English language requirements

All research degree programs require applicants whose first language is not English to pass a validated test in English. Validated tests and minimum required scores are detailed below. Please note that test scores are valid for 2 years.

IELTS (Academic) An overall score of at least 7.0 with no less than 6.0 in each section.

TOEFL iBT We require a total test score of 100 with the following minimum scores in each of these sections: Listening 21, Reading 21, Speaking 23, Writing 22.
