Fully Funded ISTA PhDs 2023-24, Institute of Science and Technology Austria

One of the distinguishing features of the ISTA PhD program is the shared graduate school experience.

The initial phase of rotations and interdisciplinary coursework promotes broad exposure to important scientific approaches and problems, allowing students to build a solid foundation for intensive research in the second phase of the PhD program.

PHD PROGRAM STRUCTURE

the purpose of ISTA PhD program is to train intellectually broad, interesting, open-minded scientists who are able to approach problems from different angles and cooperate with different types of scientists. To this end, our students complete an innovative interdisciplinary training program consisting of both research and taught learn the elements and receive close mentorship from world-class faculty from a variety of disciplines.

All students whose broad research interests match those of our faculty are eligible to join the ISTA PhD program. The thesis supervisor is selected at the end of the first year. In the first year, students graduate course work and rotations in three different study groups.

After finding a suitable home within the research group and thereby securing a thesis supervisor and, most importantly, after passing the exam qualification exam, students work on dissertation research, participate in international conferences and colloquiums, and receive training in teaching and other transferable skills. Research groups are intentionally kept small to ensure close supervision, and all students are mentored by several faculty members who form the dissertation committee.

Students usually complete their studies in 4.5-6 years. Students working in theoretical groups are usually faster than students working in experimental groups (upper limit).

RESEARCH FUNDING AND AWARDS

Funding is critical to maintaining the resources needed by scientists in all areas of research. ISTA relies on a variety of funding sources to support all of its researchers.

The Grants Office is there to support applicants who wish to apply for external funding. ISTA’s PhD students are no exception, as it is best to acquire grant writing skills early in their scientific career. Competitive peer scholarships for academic job applications can be a strong indicator that 1) you are a scientist worth investing in and 2) your research projects are of the highest quality.

Scholarships Grants to PhD students and trainees at ISTA include:

  • DOC scholarships from the Austrian Academy of Sciences
  • Böhringer Ingelheim Foundation scholarships
  • IBM PhD Scholarship
  • FFG’s FEMTech Scholarships and
  • ISternships (internally funded).

Students can also be part of larger projects within research groups. ISTA has been particularly successful in achieving a large number of prestige European Research Council (ERC) grants which rewards innovative projects for research excellence.

In addition, students can be involved in projects funded by more local sources, such as:

  • Austrian Science Foundation (FWF)
  • Land of Lower Austria (NFB)

The opportunity to network with other institutions is one of the highlights of the cooperative grants currently operating at ISTA. These bring together prominent scientists (and sometimes companies) from across Europe and beyond to work on problems in a particular field. They may also be specifically admitted to the doctoral program, as in the following cases:

  • Doktoratskollegs from FWF
  • Initial Training Networks (ITN) from the European Commission.
