Program description
Our researchers study the important problems of our time that social science can uniquely solve with a Ph.D. opportunities in politics and comparative politics, political theory, international relations, and sociology.
Our active faculty and Ph.D. researchers and post-doctoral scholars, creating a stimulating environment for learning. By covering key areas across the political and social sciences within one department, we enable interdisciplinary research conversations, meaning that ideas and research findings are easily shared and further debated.
While our experienced staff offers intensive supervision, you also have academic freedom and time for your own independent research. In addition, our researchers benefit from interacting with academics, practitioners and other leaders in their fields who are regular visitors to our Section and can offer their advice and insights on your work.
It is not EUI’s policy to offer individual guidance and advice on dissertation proposals. You should contact potential supervisors, read the information on research topics on this page, and indicate three professors who can supervise your dissertation on the application form.

Early Career Results for SPS PhD (2018, 2019, 2020)

How to apply
You must submit your application and all required documents through the interactive online application form that will be available November 1.
The deadline To complete the application form, submit references and all required documents: January 31. Applications can be made until 14:00 (CET – Italian time) on that day.
There is two different stages in the application process:
1. Register as soon as possible
After the application form is activated on November 1st, it is recommended that you register by entering your personal and referee information as soon as possible. This is important to give your referees enough time to submit their reference letters before the deadline. Reference letters will not be accepted after the deadline of 31 January (14:00 CET).
2. Complete and submit your application by 31 January (14:00 – CET)
Once registered, you can continue working on your application (including required documents) until the deadline. Submit the application only after filling all the information correctly and successfully uploading the latest version of the required documents. References can be submitted at any time before or after submitting your application, up to the deadline.

Funding Information
Compatibility
To be eligible for national funding, you must meet specific requirements set by national funding bodies. These may include conditions relating to your nationality, residence, degree and timing of award. Please visit each relevant financial institution’s information page for specific funding terms, eligibility criteria and application instructions.
In the EUI online application form, you will be asked to select at least one and up to three funding options: Only indicate which you have good reason to believe you are eligible and which you wish to apply for. If you are eligible for more than one funding program, you will be considered for admission under each program; in case of admission, you will receive funding from only one program based on the decision made by the EUI selection committee and communicated to you regarding the offer of admission.
An application for admission to an EUI doctoral program is automatically an application for national funding with: exceptions: Greece, Portugal, Slovenia. Your EU application can ONLY be accepted if you apply for funding from one of these countries separately submit a mandatory separate application.
EU Contracting States
Ph.D. Candidates funded by EUI contracting states receive a monthly stipend/scholarship and do not pay the tuition fees of the program:
- Austria, Belgium (Flanders – Wallonia/Brussels), Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark,
- Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia,
- Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal,
- Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.
EUI Associate Member States
Ph.D. Candidates sponsored by EUI Associate Member States receive a monthly stipend/scholarship and do not pay the tuition fee of the program, which is paid by the national authorities: Norway and Switzerland.
“Grants for Foreigners” Program of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation awards grants to candidates from the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, People’s Republic of China (PRC), Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Russian Federation, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, United States of America (USA). Program tuition is also covered.
EU member states do not adhere to the EU
EU Member States: Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Lithuania have not yet signed the EU Convention. Consequently, there is currently no national funding for a Ph.D. candidates from these countries.
Candidates from these countries who are not eligible for any other funding program may be accepted subject to securing foreign sponsorship.
Other countries
The EUI awards scholarships to candidates from the countries listed on the EUI Special Doctoral Scholarships page who are not eligible for any other funding program.
All other candidates who are not eligible for any funding program may be admitted subject to securing an external scholarship.
Ukrainian candidates affected by the war in Ukraine
The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science offers special EUI Doctoral Grants for Ukrainian candidates directly affected by the war in Ukraine.
