The University of Sussex is delighted to offer a number of ESRC-funded studentships through the South East Network for Social Science Doctoral Preparation Partnerships.

What do you get?

Fellowships are for 3 to 4 years and cover PhD tuition fees (or MSc fees if required in the first year), a stipend (currently £17,668 pa) and some research and training costs.

We run 12 accredited training pathways across Sussex.

Students on these tracks are available for 4-year funding (Masters + PhD) or three-year funding for a PhD (PhD only) and can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis.

Compatibility

Academic Eligibility: If you are applying for a 1+3 PhD programme, you must have at least a second-class (2.1) first-class honors degree.

+3 If you are applying for a PhD, you must have:

  • at least an upper second class (2.1) undergraduate honors degree
  • a master’s degree in a relevant discipline that includes significant research training or relevant professional experience

Residential Eligibility: SeNSS ESRC students are open to UK and Foreign/International students in accordance with UKRI student eligibility guidelines. Up to 30% of each group of students can be Overseas students. ESRC scholarships cover UK-level fees and International-level PhD fees. Our Graduate Admissions team will advise you whether you qualify as an International student for fee purposes.

Award period: If you have already started your PhD studies, you may still be eligible for ESRC student funding for part of your PhD studies, provided that you will have at least 50% of your study period funded by 1 October 2023 when your studentship starts. – i.e. you have not completed more than 18 months of full-time PhD study by 1 October 2023.

Part time students can apply and in such cases the scholarships are paid on a pro rata basis – usually part-time for a period of 6 years.

Master’s methods training: SeNSS accepts applications for candidates with or without Master’s qualification. Your SeNSS scholarship can be for 4 years to cover the Masters program and PhD degree. The ESRC requires all PhD candidates to undertake advanced training in Social Research Methods across the full range of quantitative and qualitative methods so that you can be awarded 3.5 or 3.25 years of funding to cover additional MSc modules. Not all Sussex MSc courses are endorsed by the ESRC. If you do not have a Masters, make sure you apply for a combined program (Masters + PhD) starting with one of the Sussex Masters programs below:

How to apply

The SeNSS ESRC student competition is now open for applications.

If you want to apply for an ESRC studentship, you must first apply for a PhD course at the University of Sussex. Once you have secured a place, you will need to complete a SeNSS student application form.

Please note: Students who wish to complete the SeNSS application form should discuss this with their supervisors. You cannot apply for a SeNSS scholarship if your supervisor is not approved.

The deadline to apply for a place at the University of Sussex is 6 January 2023.

The deadline for filling the SeNSS application form on the HEI application portal – https://senss.heiapply.com/application/student_led_home – is 20 January 2023.
