American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship 2023-24

The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship promotes educational access and opportunity while increasing international diversity. Bringing together the best of AU – academic excellence, leadership development and global engagement – the AU Emerging Global Leader achieves, inspires and serves with vision. AU EGL is dedicated to positive civic and social change and will return home to improve under-resourced, underserved communities in their home countries. We invite you to meet our inspiring current AU Emerging Global Leader Scholars and recent EGLS graduates.

The AU EGL scholarship covers all billable AU expenses (full tuition, room and board). one An international student who needs a visa to study in the United States (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa). Retires no covers non-reimbursable expenses such as mandatory health insurance, books, airfare, and miscellaneous expenses (approximately $4,000 per year).

The AU EGL scholarship is renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate study based on continued satisfactory academic performance.

Important: Only one The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is available for Fall 2023. If you have not been selected as a 2023 AU EGL recipient and wish to continue the application process, you may be eligible for partial merit scholarships. However, you must provide proof of additional funds beyond the initial $4,000 you provided. Estimated costs for the 2023-2024 school year are $73,802.

You cannot apply if:

  • You are a US citizen, a US permanent resident, a US permanent resident, or a dual citizen of the US and another country.
  • You are enrolled in or have already begun any postsecondary education at another university in your home country or in the United States.
  • You graduated high school earlier than 2021.

AU EGLS applicants must apply Regular Decision for Fall (August) 2023. Do not apply Early Decision (ED).

Preference will be given to:

  1. International students who have overcome various barriers and challenges, as well as students from diverse and underrepresented global and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  2. A minimum 3.8 GPA equivalent of a 4.0 GPA (or in the top 10% of the graduating class) for grades 9-12.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service, and advancing the needs of people in their country.
  4. students with one of the following:
    1. 95+ TOEFL iBT (all subscores must be 20 or above)
    2. Paper-based TOEFL subscore of 24+ (taken after May 31, 2017)
    3. 7.0+ IELTS (all subscores must be 6.0 or above)
    4. A minimum SAT Reading subscore of 33
    5. 29 minimum ACT English
    6. 65 minimum PTE
    7. 120+ Duolingo (all subscores must be 110 or above)
    8. A Cambridge Assessment English score of 185 or higher. Each subscore must be 169 or higher.
  5. Students still in middle/high school and graduating by June 2023.
  6. Important: Students in the IB system must plan to graduate with a full IB diploma with at least 3 HL subjects. Students studying the British A-Levels system must complete at least 3 A-levels and complete 13 years of study by August 2023.

Very important: AU EGLS selection process is most competitive. Preference will be given to AU EGLS applicants who apply and complete the AU EGLS application, Common Application, and international admissions submission process by December 15, 2022.

Instructions

  1. Complete the online AU EGLS application; the application will be ready on September 1, 2022.
  2. Submit a bank letter and AU Financial Certificate (AU CFIS) form – each showing a minimum of US$4,000. These can be downloaded through your Future Eagle Portal or faxed to +1-202-885-1025. Examples of bank letters and AU CFIS form template
  3. Submit your official TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English, PTE, or Cambridge Assessment English Test scores by December 15, 2022 at the latest. Please send official English language proficiency transcripts directly to American University Undergraduate Admissions.
  4. Complete and submit the Common Application or Coalition Application with all supporting documents according to each checklist by the AU EGLS priority deadline of December 15, 2022 or at the latest by January 15, 2023. Please note that the initial AU EGLS application package must include a bank letter confirming the minimum amount 4000 USD (not $73,802). Students who do not submit a complete application package with all supporting documents by the deadline will not be considered.
  5. If you are applying through an EducationUSA-sponsored program or are a former US State Department FLEX or YES high school scholarship recipient, please submit a letter confirming your candidacy from your EducationUSA center advisor. You may request that the letter be sent as a PDF to levinson@american.edu.
  6. If you are not selected as one of the finalists, you may still be accepted to American University, Washington, DC and eligible for partial merit scholarships. However, to continue the application process, you must provide proof of funds of $73,802 (estimated expenses for the first year of study).
