5 fully funded +3 (three-year) PhD Studentships, University of Bristol, UK

Application Deadline: January 6, 2023

We are pleased to announce five +3 (three years) PhD studies It will start in the fall of 2023. Through an ambitious research program across five domains of social life (care, consumption, learning, movement, and organization) and four key technical domains (artificial intelligence, high-performance networks, robotics, and augmented, virtual, and augmented reality), we challenge technology companies and governments to we explore the interrelationship between the “big” futures he makes and the “small” futures that emerge in everyday life. Since these interactions have multiple and unpredictable consequences for the economy, politics, and society; we are committed to exploring these, as well as the prospects for a fairer and more sustainable future. Within the Futures Studio, four intersecting threads (theory, methods, collaboration and design) will provide integrated capacity building and intervention for socio-digital futures research at the Center.

Two of these students are funded by the ESRC; Three are Alumni-funded scholarships. Each student has a project description that offers a broad indication of priority areas and/or thematic focus and/or core academic disciplines. These project descriptors should be the starting point for applicants to develop their research proposals. In doing so, the expectation is that all proposals should be directly linked to CenSoF and connected to the multiple elements of the Center (practice areas, feasibility projects, the four themes of the Futures Studio).

As members of the Center’s PhD Program and ECR network, all CenSoF PhD students will be offered mentorship, support (both from peers and experienced researchers) and career development training opportunities. They will also benefit from opportunities where possible, including the South West Doctoral Teaching Partnership and Bristol Doctoral College.
